BLS AED Algorithm - Medicus Training

BLS AED Algorithm

This page on Medicus Training provides a detailed guide on the BLS AED Algorithm, outlining the steps for effectively using an Automated External Defibrillator during Basic Life Support procedures. It is designed to help healthcare professionals and laypersons understand and implement AED usage in sudden cardiac arrest situations. The guide includes clear instructions and visual aids to ensure accurate application of the algorithm.

AED Operation

Scene Safety and AED Activation

  • Confirm scene safety; ensure the victim is not in water.
  • Power on the AED to initiate the AED algorithm.

AED Pad Placement

  • Cease CPR momentarily to prepare for AED use.
  • Quickly expose and dry the chest as needed.
  • Apply AED pads, avoiding placement over pacemakers or medication patches. Remove any patches in the way.

Rhythm Analysis

  • Clear the area; no one should touch the victim during AED rhythm analysis.
  • Ensure proper pad contact, reapplying if necessary.

Shock Delivery

  • If a shockable rhythm is detected, verify that no one is touching the victim.
  • Deliver the shock promptly by pressing the designated button.

Post-Shock Actions

  • If no shock is advised or after shock delivery, resume CPR immediately.
  • Continue 2-minute cycles of CPR, followed by rhythm analysis as directed by the AED prompts.

Continuation of Care

  • Adhere to the AED's instructions, alternating between shock administration and CPR as directed.
