BLS CPR Algorithm - Medicus Training

BLS CPR Algorithm

This page provides a detailed guide on the BLS CPR Algorithm, outlining the essential steps for performing effective chest compressions, ventilation, and AED use during Basic Life Support procedures. It aims to equip both healthcare professionals and laypersons with the knowledge required to respond to cardiac emergencies efficiently. The guide includes clear, concise instructions and visual aids to ensure proper implementation of the CPR algorithm.

Solo Resuscitation Procedure

Initial Positioning

  • Place the victim supine on a stable, flat surface.
  • Kneel adjacent to the victim, aligning your knees with the victim’s chest.

Hand Placement and Compression Technique

  • Position the heel of one hand on the lower half of the victim’s sternum.
  • Lay your other hand over the first and interlock fingers.
  • Keep arms straight and deliver forceful, rapid compressions.

Compression Depth and Rate

  • Compress the chest 2 to 2.4 inches for adults and adolescents.
  • Aim for at least one third the chest diameter in children.
  • Allow complete chest recoil after each compression.
  • Maintain a compression rate of 100 to 120 per minute.

AED Deployment

  • Continue compressions uninterrupted until an AED is ready to use or EMS assumes care.
  • Utilize the AED immediately when available.

Ventilation Technique

  • For adults, mouth-to-mouth is optional; if capable, administer two breaths every 30 compressions.
  • For children and infants, provide two breaths after every 30 compressions due to arrests typically being respiratory in nature.

Calling for Assistance

  • Use a mobile phone to call EMS without leaving the patient if possible.
  • If alone, you may leave an adult or adolescent to retrieve an AED or summon help.
  • In a witnessed collapse of a child or infant, prioritize getting help before starting CPR.

Special Consideration for Unwitnessed Arrest

  • In an unwitnessed arrest of a child or infant, administer CPR for two minutes before leaving to call EMS or fetch an AED.
